Eleanor Florence McCarthy
Eleanor Florence McCarthy, a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest on Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at Putnam Hospital Center, Carmel due to cardiovascular complications soon after her beloved husband Edward passed this June.
Eleanor was born November 9, 1921in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Florence Cedarwall Sandstrom. She attended Seventh Day Adventist Grammar and High School. In 1936, she met Edward McCarthy, through her good friend, Emma McCarthy, his sister.
After years of studying the piano, Eleanor passed the entrance exam for Julliard School of Music in Manhattan. However, her parents decided to send her to Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, Massachusetts. After two years, she decided to marry her friend and the love of her life, Edward. They were married in July of 1941. In June of 1942, their first daughter was born. Shortly thereafter, Ed went to War. Eleanor lived alone for four years while Ed was overseas.
Eleanor was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. She was an accomplished musician and piano teacher. A dedicated parishioner of Zion Episcopal Church, Wappingers Falls for thirty years, she was manager of the Chime Shop and was a Sunday School Teacher. She was a volunteer at St. Francis Hospital for fifteen years and a volunteer organist at Mount Alvernia for six years.
She will be remembered for her music, her laugh and her warm hugs. She was a dedicated care taker for her three aunts for many years.
Eleanor is survived by her daughters, Eleanor Vora and her husband, Madhu of Los Gatos, California and Elaine McCarthy of Boston, Massachusetts; her granddaughter, Erin Alley and her husband, Colin of San Francisco, California and her great-grandson, Cayden Edward Alley.
Family will receive their friends from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, October 21, 2005 at Straub Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, October 22 at the funeral home.
Entombment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Community Mausoleum, Poughkeepsie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Eleanor's name to the Salvation Army, who helped locate Edward when he was MIA during World War II at The Salvation Army National Headquarters, P.O. Box 269, Alexandria, VA 22313
