Obituary of Fanny Ellowitz

Fanny Ellowitz, a resident of Poughkeepsie, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, April 18, 2015. She was 95. Daughter of the late Joseph and Rebecca Gorovitz, she was born February 9, 1920 in Liverpool, England. While raising her family on Staten Island, Fanny worked her way up through the New York City Public Library System. She started as a part time clerk at a sub-branch and eventually became the administrative assistant to the Director of the Library of the City of New York. When she relocated to Poughkeepsie, she continued working in the library field at the Vassar College Library until her retirement. Fanny had a great love of reading, music, dance, film, art and the world around her. She was also a member of the book club, Great Books. She enjoyed hosting family get-togethers and feeding her family. Fanny's greatest joy came in being in the company of her entire family; children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all that came along with them. Survivors include her son, Peter Ellowitz and his wife, Joyce and their son, Isaac Ellowitz; her daughter, Joan Beth Kalivas; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Ellowitz and her children, Sara Jane Ellowitz and her fiance, Thomas Coupart and Nancy Kraiza and her husband, Mike; her great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Nicholas and Cameron; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, David Ellowitz; her son, Henry Ellowitz; her brother, Louis Kelem; and sister, Beatrice Osten. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Fanny's name to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104.
