Obituary of Daniel J. Garvey

Daniel J. Garvey On May 20, 2005 Daniel Joseph Garvey lost his life in an automobile accident in Columbia County, New York. He was 63. Daniel was born on April 7, 1942 in Woodside, NY to Daniel and Delia Garvey. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Sister Joan Garvey, an Amityville Dominican. Daniel retired just two years ago after working over 20 years as a substance abuse counselor in the New York prison system and later in the hospital. His passion was assisting others to learn how to live a different way of life; he taught by example. Dan was also an active participant in AA, both in Maine and New York. He made many friends and found peace, healing and renewal at retreats at Graymoor Retreat Center in Garrison, NY. This was a very special place for him. Daniel loved people and he will be missed by his Maine cousins, Patrice Janssen of Searsport, Maine and Kerry Black of Liberty, Maine. He reconnected with them 17 years ago and made a special effort to stay in contact. He has many special friends who will miss his wonderful sense of humor and caring touch. In addition to Patrice and Kerry, he is also survived by cousins, Carol Capell of New York City, Geri Faber of Mount Sinai, New York, Ed McTiernan of Mastic Beach, New York, Kevin McTiernan of the state of Florida and Patricia DeHart of Seattle, Washington. A memorial service in Dan's memory will be held at Pilgrim Hall, Graymoor Retreat Center in Garrison, NY on Sunday, May 29, 2005 at 11 o'clock followed by a reception at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Graymoor Spiritual Life Center, P.O. Box 300, Garrison, N.Y. 10524-0300, in Daniel's name.
