Obituary of Elizabeth May Hammond

Elizabeth May Hammond Elizabeth May Hammond of Chelsea entered into rest Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. She was 92. Daughter of the late Isaac and Lucy Yoh Davidson, she was born on September 12, 1918 in Wernershill, Pennsylvania. She married George W. Hammond on August 27, 1939 at Trinity Church in Fishkill; he preceded her in death, passing on August 13, 1999. Betty worked as a postal clerk for the United States Post Office in Chelsea for 15 years, until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of St. Mark's Church in Chelsea. There, she was a member of their vestry and altar guild. She also was a lifetime member of Chelsea Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her children, William G. Hammond and his wife, Peggy of Chelsea, Bette L. Scagnelli and her husband, Carlo of Rhinebeck, and Gayle Thew, widow of Donald Thew, of Wappingers Falls; grandchildren, Lisa Hammond of Wappingers Falls, Susan Hammond of Chelsea, William Hammond of Mesa, AZ, Karen Bain of Milford, CT, Robin Thew of Millbrook, Jennifer Gallery of Salt Point, Kellea Borquist of Sherman, TX, and Daniel Scagnelli of Mesa, AZ; and great-grandchildren, James, Taylor, Catherine, Samuel, Jarod, Kristofer, Kaylea, Neeley, Wesley, William, Chelsea, Tracy and Taylor. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Sussana Hauck. Family will receive friends on Sunday, August 7 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Straub Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, New York 12590. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 8 at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's Church on Liberty Street in Chelsea. Interment will follow in Fishkill Rural Cemetery, Fishkill.
