Obituary of Robert J. Nevins
Robert J. Nevins, Sr.
We are a team. We have lost our leader but his spirit will always be with us.
Robert J. Nevins, Sr., 80, left us on May 9, 2011 to join the love of his life, his wife, Dolores.
Bob was born on January 6, 1931 to Frank and Stella Fitzgerald Nevins. He attended Wappingers Central Schools. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. For forty-two years he was employed at Texaco Research Center having various titles until his retirement in 1990. His "other family" were the members of the New Hamburg Fire District, Station 1. He was so proud to be a life member. He was an avid sports fan who closely followed the New York Rangers and New York Yankees.
On October 31, 1954 he married his sweetheart, Dolores Cwik. She predeceased him on April 2, 2003.
He loved his family and they loved him. He is survived by his beloved children and their spouses; daughter, Darlene Johnson and husband, Larry and son, Robert and wife, Kimberly; his "priceless" granddaughter, Shelby Byron and husband, Christopher and his very soon to be great-granddaughter.
He is also survived by his twin brother, Francis; his brother, Ronald; sister, Sandra Ettinger as well as nieces and nephews who all share wonderful memories.
The family would like to thank the staff at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, 5th Floor South Circle and The Pines at Poughkeepsie for their support and compassion during Dad's last days.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Straub, Catalano and Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls. Members of the New Hamburg Fire District will gather for services at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Astrid Storm officiating.
Family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 13 and process to Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, South Avenue, Poughkeepsie for services at 11 a.m. in the Community Mausoleum.
In Bob's memory, donations may be made to the New Hamburg Fire District, Station 1, 15 Channingville Road, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590 or to St. Nicholas on the Hudson, 37 Point Street, New Hamburg, NY 12590.
Bob was always grateful for life's blessings. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. In his honor, take time to "smell the roses."
