Obituary of Malcolm Hait
Malcolm Hait, a resident of Wappingers Falls, entered into rest Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at his home. He was 87.
Son of the late Irving and Ermine Myers Hait, he was born July 9, 1927 in Poughkeepsie. Mal proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He married the former Ann Henion on May 7, 1950 in Poughkeepsie. Mrs. Hait survives at home.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a Purchasing Agent for Wappingers Central School District and had worked for radio stations in this area and Connecticut for many years as an announcer. He was well known in the local area as "Willie the Weatherman" for WKIP with his catch phrase "Stay on the Sunnyside."
Mal was a former President and Life Member of the Hughsonville Fire Company and former member of the Hughsonville Board of Fire Commissioners. He was a life member of the Hughsonville and Poughkeepsie Exempt Firemen's Association. Mal was a former Councilman for the Town of Wappinger. He was a former member of the Local 238 American Federation of Musicians and a member of the Wappingers Falls Elks Lodge 2609. He had been a director and former president of the Wappingers Rural Cemetery and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Wappingers Falls.
In addition to his wife of sixty-four years, he is survived by his children, Susan Hamilton and husband, Barry of Whitsett, North Carolina, Gail Scotto and husband, Louis of Wappingers Falls and Paul Hait and wife, Jo-Ann of Wappingers Falls; his brother, Gerald Hait and wife, Sandra of Hyde Park; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Donald Hait.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 31, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 1 at Wappingers Rural Cemetery, West Main Street in Wappingers Falls.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to United Methodist Church of Wappingers Falls, 9 Mesier Avenue, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590 or Hudson Valley Hospice, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
