Obituary of Nicholas J. Dougherty

Nicholas J. Dougherty Nicholas J. Dougherty of the Town of Poughkeepsie entered into rest Monday, June 19, 2006 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was 78. Son of the late Patrick and Jean Rainey Dougherty, he was born on February 11, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan. After graduation from high school, Nick volunteered for the Army Air Force. He was one of the first to staff the newly formed United States Air Force. During his service, he received many decorations and commendations. After he was discharged in 1959, he went to work for various companies in the aerospace industry. Nick met his wife Rose Anne in Denver, Colorado in March of 1953. They married six weeks later on April 24 and spent the next 53 years raising their three daughters and moving around the country. They lived in Carmel, NY for several years while the girls completed Carmel High School. Nick and Rose Anne owned and operated two service stations. Following the girls' graduation, Nick went back to work in the aerospace industry; his job took them to the Columbus, OH area. This is where they chose to retire, on Buckeye Lake, where they could fish from their dock and go boating on the lake. They decided to come back to New York in 2004 to be closer to their daughters. Survivors include his loving wife, Rose Anne; his daughters, Carol Anne Wilson and her husband, Peter Schultz, Catherine Robertson, and Candace Metzler and her husband, Kurt; his brothers, Patrick and Robert Dougherty; his sister, Sally Hardin; grandchildren, Rebecca Wilson and her husband, Tony Francis, Emily Robertson, Renee Robertson, Kurt Metzler and his wife, Katrina, and Tom Metzler and his wife, Angie; and great-grandchildren, Alyssa Wilson, Christopher Metzler, Billy Metzler and Savanna Metzler. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, William and his sisters, Isabelle and Grace. Family will receive their friends from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, June 22 at Straub Funeral Home, 55 East Main St., Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Wysox Cemetery in Wysox, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Nick's name to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 or a charity of one's choice.
