Obituary of Floyd Houston

Floyd Houston affectionately known to most as Pop's or Papa was born on November 18, 1939 in Brooklyn N.Y. at Kings County Hospital to the late James Houston, Sr. and Matti Turner Houston. Floyd had an older brother James Houston, Jr. All of whom have predeceased Floyd. Floyd moved to the Wassaic facility at the age of 9 years, in 1947. He lived at Wassaic for the next 38 years of his life before he moved to the Maguire Pavilion (Wappingers Falls N.Y.) operated by Greystone Programs Inc. On March 21, 1985. For the next 16 years of Floyd's life he would make meaningful relationships with his peers he lived with at Maguire Pavilion and the staff that served him. Floyd was known for his smooth walk, and big hands. In 2001 Floyd was moved out of Maguire Pavilion into a residential home setting in Hyde Park N.Y. operated by Greystone Programs Inc named the Van Kirk House. There Floyd became friends very fast with his other 8 house mates, as they became as close as brothers. Over the next 16 years he lived at Van Kirk. In 2017 Floyd then moved to the Universal House (Wappingers Falls N.Y.), where he lived until Wednesday, June 13, 2018 when he passed away peacefully in his sleep. Floyd will be remembered for his smile, His singing of the song spider man during music therapy, being asked What Time Is It his response 5 Minutes. As well as the joy he brought to a room when he came in. He was loved by many and liked by most. Friends will gather on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street in Wappingers Falls. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Shirley Lawson giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Greystone Plot at Wappingers Rural Cemetery, West Main Street in Wappingers Falls.
