Obituary of Eugene P. Murphy

Eugene P. Murphy, 97, of Hopewell Junction and formerly of Flushing, NY passed away peacefully with family present on May 12, 2017 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was born in Queens, NY on December 1, 1919 to the late James and Mary Murphy. Gene retired in 1976 as a Lieutenant of the NYC Police Department after 29 years of service. Gene lost his bride of 72 years, Mildred (Campbell), last October 11. He was active in the Holy Name Society of St. Kevin's Church in Flushing and the Emerald Society of the NYPD. After moving to Hopewell Junction in 2002, he served as a collection counter at St. Columba Church. Gene built most of the home where he raised his ten children. His self-taught construction skills were passed onto his children and grandchildren. His sense of humor was enjoyed by all. Gene and Mildred travelled cross-country in their RV many times to visit family. In his "spare" time, he enjoyed Mildred's apple pies, playing with his grandchildren, especially checkers, and cheering for the Mets. Gene is survived by his children, Kathleen and Gerald Leventhal, Virginia and Daniel Cassano, James and Patricia Murphy, Maureen and Paul Cacioppo, Eugene Murphy and Melinda Praetorius, Mary Ann and John Smaldone, Michael and Kathleen Murphy, Daniel and Debra Murphy, and Patrick Murphy. He was blessed with twenty-seven grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Rev. Alfred Murphy, O.S.A. and his sister-in-law, Doris Madsen, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his infant son, Kevin Murphy, brother, Kenneth Murphy, brothers-in-law, William Campbell and Joseph Madsen, and sister-in-law, Catherine Campbell. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 18 at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82 in Hopewell Junction. Interment will follow in the family plot at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. Family and friends should meet at the Wellwood Avenue gate by 1:30.
