Obituary of Gary J. Nagelhout
Gary John Nagelhout, 68 years old, of Wappingers Falls, NY, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family and friends on October 30, 2024.
He was born in Paterson, New Jersey, one of three children of John and Elsie Nagelhout. Gary graduated from NJIT in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He went on to achieve his Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1986 and a second Masters of Science in Adolescent Mathematics Education in 2010 from SUNY Albany.
Gary and Linda’s journey began in 1978 at an Intervarsity fellowship feast in Montclair, NJ. They later married on March 29, 1980 in their hometown of Wayne, NJ and relocated to Wappingers Falls, NY. As life grew, so did their family. They were blessed with 4 beautiful children; Kristin, Michael, Laura and Melissa. Gary and Linda remained in Wappingers Falls where they were happily married for 44 years.
Gary worked at IBM as an electrical engineer for 33 years. Upon his “retirement” from IBM, he embraced his new profession/passion as a teacher. He began his second career at Faith Christian Academy, where he taught math to middle and high school students for 14 years and taught as an adjunct math professor at Dutchess Community College for 12 years. Gary excelling in his passion for teaching and investing in the lives of all his students, no matter what walk of life they were in, taught math to inmates through the initiative program at Bard College. Outside of teaching, he was an active member of Immanuel Church for 44 years, where he served on church council, operated the AV equipment and managed the care of the buildings and property. However, Gary’s most coveted titles were head counselor for the Cadet Program and Bible Adventure Leader during Vacation Bible School.
Gary’s deepest passions were for unconditionally loving and spoiling his grandchildren, teaching children of all ages about Jesus’ love, developing a greater understanding of Jesus’ love for him through daily Bible reading and devotions, and his unwavering commitment and joy serving and volunteering in the Tres Dias community. His hobbies included wood working and anything involving the use of tools.
Gary is survived by his wife, Linda and his children: Kristin (Dan) Hepner, Michael Nagelhout, Laura (Jon) Krehling, and Melissa (Anthony) Wittek. He was blessed with 4 grandchildren: Eric & Derrick Hepner and Annabelle & Harper Wittek. Gary is also survived by his brother Roy Nagelhout and his sister Joyce Nagelhout.
