Obituary of Muriel T. Westermann

Muriel Theresa Westermann, a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie for 60 years, entered eternal rest on August 24, 2024. Muriel was born August 22, 1925, in Brooklyn, NY, and was the beloved oldest daughter of the late Ruth and Francis Tierney. In addition to her parents, Muriel was predeceased by her sister, Gloria, and cousins, Rosemary and Catherine, with whom she was raised.

Muriel was a proud graduate of Washington Irving High School in Manhattan, NY, and began her career as a bookkeeper at Haskins & Sells. On April 23, 1950, she married John H. Westermann.  Their forty-plus year love story, that started by chance at a cousin's wedding, ended far too early when the love of her life passed away in 1992. 

Muriel is survived by her five children: Mary E. Westermann of Poughkeepsie, NY; John and wife Jennifer Westermann of Endicott, NY; Edward Westermann and wife Bethany of Canandaigua, NY; Teresa and husband Mark Stegner of Clinton Corners, NY; and Allen and wife Annmarie Westermann of ChampionsGate, FL. She was also cherished by her ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Parish in Wappingers Falls, NY and the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Queen of Peace 1534. Her love of dance started at an early age and in 1939, she danced at the World’s Fair in New York.  This love continued later in life as a member of the Do-C-Do Square Dance Club.  Muriel was known for her meticulous work as a dental office bookkeeper and her vibrant love for family gatherings. She had a passion for traveling and had a special fondness for Disney and anything chocolate.

Muriel’s warmth, kindness, and joy in life will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love and dedication will remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 11 Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls on Wednesday, August 28, 2024  at 10 a.m., will be held to celebrate her remarkable life. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Donations in Muriel's name may be made to St. Mary's Church or a charity of your choice.
