Obituary of Herbert S. Owen

Herbert S. Owen was born on July 17, 1931 in the village of Wappingers Falls, NY to Herbert and Ella (Blackburn) Owen. He was a resident at Meadows (The Baptist Home) in Rhinebeck, NY until his death on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

In 1950, he married Joan Hupcey (1931-1977) and together they raised and loved David Owen (1952-1981); Debbie, husband Jeff Bennett; Timothy, wife Linda Owen; Mary Beth, husband Todd Kramer; Michael Owen; and Loriann Barry, who survive him, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Herb had two siblings whom predeceased him: Ethel Relyea in 2020 and Maude Murray in 2023. Many nieces and nephews survive.

Herb also leaves his wife of 34 years, Shirley Langlois and her children: Michelle, Gabrielle, Gerard and Jonathan; and five grandchildren.

Herb was a graduate of Wappingers Central Schools, Class of 1950. Proud to have served his country in the United States Navy, he was honorably discharged in 1954, having served aboard the USS Oriskany. He went on to work most of his life for the telephone company in several capacities.

He enjoyed time spent in Ogunquit, ME and his beloved Myrtle Beach, SC, where he played golf and more golf! He also enjoyed fishing. When he wasn’t traveling, Herb loved to spend time in his shop wood-working, creating lovely pieces of furniture.

Family will receive their friends on Monday, May 6, 2024 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Martin de Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road in Poughkeepsie. Burial will take place in St. Joachim Cemetery in Beacon at a later date.

Herb requested no flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Herb’s name to a charity of your choice.
