Obituary of Donald Jerome Thompson
Donald Thompson, known by all as “DT” or “D”, entered into rest Wednesday, March 6, 2024. He was born in Yonkers, New York on October 20, 1961 to Helen Thompson. DT lived downstate until his early 20’s when he relocated to the beautiful Hudson Valley. He finally settled in Hyde Park, New York where he spent the last 20 years enjoying his home with a few friends that became his family.
DT was a man of few words, but he was a large and loud presence, a force who found a way to let everyone know what he wanted and needed in his own special way. He had a reputation for grabbing attention in very mischievous ways and things aren’t quite as fun or full with him gone.
His home was his kingdom, but his yard was his sanctuary; he had a passion for the outdoors. DT enjoyed spending time in his yard and he was often seen landscaping with his gardening cart, keeping things outside in order. The peace of nature, the warmth of the sun and his basketball hoop were things that brought him great joy.
While he preferred solitude, he enjoyed jazz and had a great love of Michael Jackson’s music. He was drawn to this music like a magnet. Watching him feel the music, move to the music – it brought tears to his eyes and clearly spoke to his soul.
But even while listening to his favorite music, he never stopped bouncing a basketball. In another life, there is no doubt DT would play hoops professionally or perhaps have been a Harlem Globetrotter! His passion for basketball was unrivaled and his ball handling skills were the best around.
DT will be greatly missed by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. We all hope that wherever he is, that ball still bounces and Michael Jackson is playing softly in the background.
Family and friends will gather at 10:30 to 11:30 am on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at Straub, Catalano and Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
A funeral service will take place at 11:30 am, following visitation, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Wappingers Rural Cemetery, Wappingers Falls. A lunch gathering of family and friends will take place immediately afterwards.
