Obituary of Prakash Mahajan

Prakash Y. Mahajan, a resident of the town of Poughkeepsie since 1978, passed away on December 21, 2023, at the age of 79. He was born in Jalgaon, India. He received a B.S. in Engineering at Pune College of Engineering, Pune, India, and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. 

For more than 25 years, Prakash held several technical and management positions at IBM as an electrical engineer, serving at IBM Poughkeepsie, East Fishkill, and Burlington, Vermont, and received several patents for his innovative contributions. 

In mid-life, Prakash faced the significant challenge of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow. He quietly and without complaint successfully fought back the cancer for over 25 years, all the while willing himself to live fully: traveling to visit with relatives, advising and guiding his sons and extended family, and providing the utmost love and care to his wife, family, and dear friends. 

Preceded in death by his parents, Yadav and Sarojini Mahajan, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ashvini Mahajan; sons, Anish and Anup Mahajan; daughter-in-law Yogita Goyal; and son-in-law Jeramee Rice.

Prakash’s life was filled with laughter, love, and a lifelong quest for knowledge. Until the very end of his journey in this world, Prakash led a dignified and fulfilling life in which he so purely embodied the meaning of his name: light. And that is how is friends, family, and colleagues across the world will remember him - with his beaming smile, gentle demeanor, and immense humility. 
 

Family and friends will gather on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street in Wappingers Falls.
