Obituary of Gertrude McManus

Gertrude McManus, a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest Monday, November 7, 2022 at her home. She was 99.

Daughter of the late Thomas and Anna Cooper DeMatteo, she was born May 31, 1923 in Beacon, NY.  She married Donald P. McManus, Sr. on July 2, 1955 in Poughkeepsie.  They were happily married for 53 years.  Mr. McManus preceded her in death on May 20, 2008.

Prior to her retirement, she worked in the catalog room at Sears in Poughkeepsie. She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Wappingers Falls.  She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved vacationing every summer in Cape Cod with her husband, children, and grandchildren.  Later in life, she enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida with her husband.  Gertrude will be remembered for the love she had for her family.

Survivors include her children, Colleen McManus-Sarubbi and her husband, Joseph of Boca Raton, Florida, Donald McManus, Jr. and his wife, Anne of Poughkeepsie, and Kathleen Ortolano and her husband, John of Lagrangeville; her grandchildren, J.T. Sarubbi and his wife, Sara, Alisha Rolim and her husband, Ricardo, Nicole and Brett Sarubbi, and John, Ryan, and Kaitlin Ortolano; her great-grandchildren, Tripp Sarubbi, Ines Rolim, and Bodhi Sarubbi; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Marion Shade, Sally Sanfilippo, and Shirley Sheeley, and her brother, Howard DeMatteo.­­­­­­­­­

The family extends special thanks and heart-felt gratitude to the care takers who provided such exceptional care for Gertrude.

Family and friends will gather for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at St. Mary’s Church, 11 Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Entombment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, South Avenue in Poughkeepsie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gertrude’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
