Obituary of Olga Sopchak
Olga Sopchak, 96, of the Town of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away on February 15, 2022 at home surrounded by her family. She has joined her beloved husband, Dan, whom she has missed dearly.
Born in Jermyn, PA on September 11, 1925, she was one of three daughters of George and Mary Hobora. She was a graduate of Jermyn High School and of St. Thomas Secretarial School, Archibald PA where she earned a degree in Business Administration. On July 23, 1955, she married Daniel P. Sopchak in Jermyn, PA. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and “Baba” to her grandchildren. You could always find her cooking and baking for her family and friends.
She was employed at I.B.M for 20 years working with children in the nursery school and pre-school program and as Director of the I.B.M Country Club’s children’s summer camp program. She was a communicant of St. Gregory the Theologian Orthodox Church in Wappingers Falls, NY of which she founded with fellow parishioners in 1964. As a devoted parishioner, she served many years as a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the church choir. Baba always said, “don’t forget to pray!”
Olga is survived by her son Daniel and his wife Ellen Sopchak of Rhinebeck, NY; her daughter Tamara and her husband Gregory Hansen of Cropseyville, NY; and her five grandchildren, Jedediah, Natasha, Jacob, Isabel and Isaiah, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Daniel, she was predeceased by her sisters, Antoinette Petorak and Marie Holowatch.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, February 20, 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at St. Gregory the Theologian Orthodox Church, 1500 Route 376 in Wappingers Falls. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. at the church with a repast to follow.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Gregory the Theologian Orthodox Church. Burial will follow at St. Tikhon’s Monastery in South Canaan, Pennsylvania.
