Obituary of Gerald D. Mannis

Gerald D. Mannis of Wappingers Falls went to the Pearly Gates Wednesday, August 12, 2015 just shy of his 90th birthday. Son of the late John and Josephine Duggan Mannis, Gerry was born on August 21, 1925 in Hinsdale, New Hampshire. He married the love of his life, Joan Kearns McGrath, on October 3, 1970 at St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls and became dad to Kathleen, Tim, and Margaret. Mrs. Mannis survives at home in Wappingers Falls. Gerry graduated from Beacon High School and Cornell University. He retired from IBM in East Fishkill after more than 30 years. Gerry was an avid, lifelong golfer, still golfing well into his 80's. He was proud of his six career holes in one and having golfed at St. Andrews and Pebble Beach. He was a longtime member of the Southern Dutchess Country Club. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Gerry was a lover of all animals, except the squirrels who ate the bird food—their thievery was not appreciated. Gerry was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls and belonged to the Order of Franciscans Secular: The Most Holy Stigmata Fraternity at Mount Alvernia. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Beacon. In addition to his wife, Joan, Gerry is survived by his children, Kathleen McGrath and her husband, Jeff Diether of San Carlos, CA, Timothy McGrath of Wappingers Falls, and Margaret McGrath Mordin and her husband, Josh Mordin of Oak Hill, VA; his four grandchildren who brought him endless joy Hannah and Aidan Mordin, Bridget and Colleen Diether; his sister, Eileen O'Donoghue of Montgomery, NY. He was predeceased by his siblings Marie Gorey, Paulina Mannis, John Mannis, Francis Mannis, Kathleen Thurston, and Rev. James Mannis. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
