Obituary of Robert Thompson

Robert Thompson, a resident of Wappingers Falls, entered into rest Thursday, February 20, 2020 at his home. He was 80 years old. Son of Warren and RoseAnne Shaefer Thompson, he was born February 8, 1940 in Yonkers. On January 7, 1961, he married the former Gail Sunde in Yonkers. Mrs. Thompson survives at home. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in 1961. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a lineman with ConEdison. He enjoyed fishing, working in the yard and watching football. Bob loved trips to the casino. He treasured time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was known to travel across the state and the country to watch them play sports and dance. In addition to his wife, Gail, he is survived by his children, Doreen Giamportone and her husband, Phil of Hyde Park and Gregory Thompson and his wife, Tazeem of Ramona, California; his sister, RoseAnn Montalbano and her husband, Joe of Fishkill; his grandchildren, Michelle and Marissa Giamportone and Annalene and Zachary Thompson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Scott Robert Thompson on August 8, 2005 and seven brothers and sisters, Carol, Raymond, Kay Lynn, Richard, Jimmy, Rosemary and Harry. Family will receive their friends on Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 28 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter’s Parish, 99 Inwood Avenue in Poughkeepsie. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, 171 Salt Point Turnpike in Poughkeepsie. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
