Obituary of Alan Michael Hoffman
Alan M. Hoffman of the Town of Poughkeepsie died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, after a long illness.
Son of the late Oscar and Dorothy Blackstone Hoffman, he was born on September 27, 1944 in Utica, New York. He married Elizabeth Sweetser on July 10, 1966 in Huntington; Mrs. Hoffman continues to reside at home in Poughkeepsie.
Mr. Hoffman lived most of his life in Huntington Station, New York. He graduated from SUNY Oswego, where he was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, and later received his Masters’ Degree from Hofstra University. He taught social studies at the middle and high school level for more than 34 years for the Valley Stream Central School District in Nassau County, until his retirement. Alan enjoyed teaching American history, in particular the Constitution. He was an active member of the New York State United Teachers’ Union and the American Federation of Teachers for many years. Alan also took pride in the fact that he was the youngest awarded Eagle Scout in Utica as a teenager. In his spare time he enjoyed crossword puzzles and the Adirondacks, especially Lake George.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughters, Dorothy Hoffman of Albany, and Frances Schneider and her husband, Scott, of Johnstown; brother, Gilbert Hoffman and his wife, Brenda, of Syracuse; and his brother-in-law, David Sweetser of Poughkeepsie.
A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family.
