Obituary of Thomas Robert Herder

Thomas Robert Herder, a 46 year resident of Wappingers Falls and formerly of Bergen County, New Jersey, entered into rest Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 84. Son of the late Marie Owens, he was born May 8, 1929 in Buffalo, New York. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 after receiving numerous awards including the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, the Combat Infantry Badge and the United Nations Service Medal. He married the former Margaret Paterson on June 2, 1956 in Brooklyn. Mrs. Herder survives at home. Tom retired from IBM in Poughkeepsie on March 28, 1985 after 21 years of service. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls and former member of the IBM Country Club. In his spare time he enjoyed tinkering with old cars and repairing computers. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Paterson Herder; his children, Annmarie Herder, Diana Herder, Juliana Herder Hilla, John Thomas Herder, and Robert J. Herder; his grandchildren, Theresa Dean, Josh Dean, Michael Mazzurco, Anthony Mazzurco, Christopher Hilla, Andrea Hilla, Corey Hilla, Keegan Bennett, Shaun Bennett, Kyle Herder, Dylan Herder, and Jordie Herder; his great-grandchildren, Austin Dean, Kaleigh Dean, Aidan Dean, Natalee Hilla, Margaret Margo Hilla, and Quinn Thomas Hilla; his brother-in-law, John Paterson; and sister-in-law, Patty Paterson. He was predeceased by his parents, Marie Depaw Owens and Robert Harry Randle; his mother-in-law, Ann Paterson; father-in-law, Archibald Paterson; and brother-in-law, Robert Paterson. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29 at St. Mary's Church, 11 Clinton Street, Wappingers Falls. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
