Obituary of Daniel P. Sopchak

Daniel P. Sopchak, 94, of the Town of Poughkeepsie entered into rest on May 30th 2015. The son of Peter and Helen Sopchak, he was born September 2, 1920 in Simpson, PA. On July 23, 1955 he married Olga Hobora in Jermyn, PA. Dan was a communicant of St. Gregory Orthodox Church where he served several years as warden, financial secretary and choir member. He was a graduate of Fell Township High School and a graduate of Millersville State Teachers College with a B.S. degree in Education, majoring in Industrial Arts. A veteran of World War II and member of American Legion Post 1466, John Livingston, he served with the 1473rd engineering Company in the European Theatre of Operation. He received two bronze stars and medals for the European/African, Middle Eastern, American Campaign and Army of occupation. He recently went on the Hudson Valley Honor Flight to Washington, D.C with his son and fellow war veterans to visit the memorials. Employed by IBM for 32 years, he performed staff and engineering assignments for the Product Development Laboratory. Prior to IBM, he was employed as a electrician at Western Electric, Kearney, NJ. In addition to his wife Olga, he is survived by his son Daniel D. and his wife Ellen of Rhinebeck, his daughter Tamara S. and her husband, Gregory Hansen, of Cropseyville, NY. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jedediah, Natasha, Jacob, Isabel and Isaiah. He was predeceased by five brothers; Michael, Alex, George, Wassil, and Peter and two sisters Martha and Ann. Visitation will be at St. Gregory Orthodox Church, 1500 Route 376 in Wappingers Falls, NY on Wednesday, June 3 from 4:00-7:00 PM, followed by a Service at 7:00 PM. On Thursday, June 4, a Prayer Service will be held at 9:00 AM at St. Gregory's. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St.Tikhon's Monastery in South Cannan, Pennsylvania. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Gregory Orthodox Church, 1500 Route 376, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
