Obituary of Barbara A. Hughes

Barbara Agnes Hughes, 90, of Wappingers Falls, passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2013. Barbara was born on January 21, 1923 in Poughkeepsie, NY, to Susan and James McKenna. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School and attended Hudson River School of Nursing. Barbara married Raymond Hughes on June 20th, 1942. Together they enjoyed Sunday rides in the country, great lifelong friends, lake vacations, cruises to the Caribbean after retirement, and the challenges and rewards of raising 13 children until his passing in 1998. Barbara was a homemaker who enjoyed her family, church, reading, Irish music, singing,crocheting, gardening, and shopping. She was an excellent organizer who efficiently managed her home while raising her large family and entertaining neighborhood children as well. She was thoughtful, kind and caring and was always available to listen and give encouragement and advice. She was a dedicated mother and friend who will be missed by many. She was a member of the Ladies' Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Queen of Peace, the St. Mary's Mothers' Guild, and St. Mary's Church Choir. Barbara will be greeted in Heaven by her husband and her siblings, Evelyn, Betty, James, Joseph and Mary Jane. Her children and their families, include son James (Flo) of Tarpon Springs, FL, son Thomas (Pat) of Vero Beach, FL, daughter Susan of Wappingers Falls, daughter Beth Anne (Bill) of Wiccopee, NY, son Donald (Sue) of Fernandina Beach, Fl, son Kevin (Carol) of Raleigh, NC, daughter Laurie (Randy) of Aurora, CO, son Tim (Rita) of Middle Hope, NY, daughter Terri (Dave) of Red Hook, NY, son Joe and fiancé Mary Jo Ervolino of Brookfield, CT, son Dan (Patty) of Pleasant Valley, NY, son Michael (Lisa) of Wappinger Falls, and son Joaquin and fiancé Danielle Rossi of Pleasant Valley, NY. She was blessed with 30 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 12, 2013 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, May 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wappingers Falls.
