Obituary of George P. Jennings

George P. Jennings of Wappingers Falls entered into rest Monday, December 31, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 75. Born October 26, 1937 in Kingston, he was the son of Irwin L. and Charlotte H. Jennings. George graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1955, Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1959 with a BS in Business Administration and from the Christian Life School of Theology in Columbus, Georgia with a Bachelor and Master of Theology Degrees. On January 2, 1960 George married the former Carol Edith Hipkins at the Old Paramus Reformed Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Mrs. Jennings survives at home. George served in the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 104th Combat Engineer Battalion of the 50th Armored Division and later served in the New Jersey National Guard. He was honorably discharged in 1965. George retired from the Wappingers Central School District after twenty two years of service. George was very active in many organizations. He was the Secretary for the Dutchess County Youth Board, a rector for the Men's Team 108 Mid Hudson Tres Dias Community, a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity, Alpha Sigma Chapter, former Vice President of the Wappingers Federation of Workers – AFL/CIO Local 3754, where he received the George H. Meany Award in 2008 and a sixty five year member of the Boy Scouts of America where he was very involved in leadership roles in various councils. George was a charter member of the Wappingers Falls Rotary Club in 1971, was currently serving as secretary and was recipient of the Cliff Docterman Award, 2009 from the Scouters of the Rotary International, Rotarian of the year 2012 and a Paul Harris Fellow. George was an active member of the Faith Assembly of God where he was involved in many ministries. In addition to his wife, George is survived by his children, Donna L. Kerila and her fiancé, Dave Glover of Endwell, NY, Susan D. Lafond and her husband, Jay of Watervliet, NY and David B. Jennings of Tuscon, AZ; his grandchildren, Amanda Lynn Kerila, Daniel Kerila, Jared Lafond and Justin Lafond; his brother, Donald H. Jennings and his wife, Dodi; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Jennings and his wife, Audrey. Family will receive their friends on Friday, January 4, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 5 at 11 a.m. at Faith Assembly of God, 254 Spackenkill Road, Poughkeepsie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in George's name to the Boy Scouts of America, Hudson Valley Council, 6 Jeanne Drive, Newburgh, New York 12550.
