Obituary of Fr. Valerian Faugno

Fr. Valerian Faugno, O.F.M. of St. Anthony Friary, Catskill, entered into rest Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, NY. He was 83. Thomas, son of Michael and Carmela (Anzalone) Faugno, was born in East Boston, MA on February 20, 1929. He was received into the First Order on July 14, 1949. He made temporary profession on July 15, 1950, and was admitted to solemn vows on July 15, 1953. Fr. Valerian was ordained a priest by Bishop Bernardine Mazzarella, OFM on June 21, 1958 at Mount Alvernia in Wappingers Falls. Fr. Valerian taught at Christopher Columbus High School, Boston (1960-73) and at MassBay Community College (1973-83). He served as parochial vicar at Saint Francis, Cambridge (1973-76), Saint Leonard, Boston (1976-83; also the Guardian from 1976-80), Our Lady of the Assumption, East Boston (1985-89) and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, East Boston (1989-95). Valerian transferred to Saint Bonaventure Friary, Brighton, in August 1995, and over the next seven years served in a variety of ways: as a member of the Formation Team, SFO Spiritual Assistant, FMU Promoter, in Parish Ministry, as Vicar, Procurator and Guardian. Fr. Valerian moved to Saint Anthony Friary, Catskill, in June 2002. A wake and vigil service will be held on Friday, December 28, at Saint Anthony Friary, Catskill, from 2-4 p.m. Fr. Valerian's body will then be transferred to Boston. On Sunday, December 30, a wake will be held at Saint Leonard Church from 7-9 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated there at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 31, with burial to follow in the Friars' Cemetery in Andover.
