Dennis Winslow

Obituary of Dennis C. Winslow

On July 4, 1947, as my mom, Lelar, and my dad, Charles along with my uncles and aunts were on their way to Coney Island to enjoy the fireworks, they decided, since this was her due date, to go to the hospital. The announcement read: The king has arrived Dennis C. Winslow Dennis was educated through the public school system in Brooklyn, NY. Upon graduating from Junior High School, he was accepted at Boys High School in Brooklyn. Along with his cousin Glenn (predeceased) he tried out for and was placed on the track team and shot-put team. Dennis really enjoyed being on the track team, especially going to Penn Relays. Upon graduating from Boys High School, he decided to become part of the New York City Police Department. When he left the Police Department, he became an automotive salesman. A man named Shep, who taught Dennis the business, told Dennis' mom that he could sell a car to anyone or anything. He worked at Future Dodge, Page Dodge, Mid-County Buick in Queens and Brooklyn. He won many awards. Upon arrival in Poughkeepsie, he worked at Poughkeepsie Ford. Dennis received his religious upbringing through his Auntie Rethella and Auntie Emily (both predeceased) in Brooklyn. He attended People's Institutional A.M.E. and Cornerstone Baptist Churches. During his adult life he became a member of Bride Street A.W.M.E. Church under Rev. Dr. Fred A. Lucas. He was a founding member of Bridge Street the Federal Credit Union and chairman of the loan department. In 1992, Dennis moved to Poughkeepsie and he became a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Walter R. Henderson. He was a member of the Board of Stewardship and Finance and vice-chairman and chairman of the Board of Trustees. He brought his future bride with him, Karen Wall; it was here on April 28, 1995 they were married. Dennis always wanted to learn how to play golf. He had all the equipment but never had the opportunity. He also loved collecting matchbox cars and going on cruises. In 2005, Dennis moved his membership to Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Edward L. Hunt. He became a member of the Board of Trustees and he formed the Watch Ministry when the church burned down in May of 2008. There were several women who were part of the Watch Ministry and he called them "his angels" and they called him "Charlie." Dennis was a no nonsense type of person and he was a man of his word. On February 4, 2015 at 12:56 p.m., God decided to bring Dennis to his new home and become principle of the largest car showroom ever. Besides his wife of 19 ½ years, he leaves with fond memories: sons, Sean (Allison), Derek (Shannelle), grandchildren: Kenan, Ariana, Jordyn, and Avery, god-daughters: Tia and Kia Lilies, sister: Debbie, adopted sister: Evelyn Newtown, 3 sister/cousins: Audrey Hudgins of Suffolk, VA, Rose (Lawrence) Utendahl of Clanton, AL and Sheryl (Lloyd) Lawrence of Pfugerville, TX, sister-in-law, Adrienne Smith, a host of other cousins and many, many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Lelar Winslow, his aunts, Ida Winslow, Rethella Harris, and Emily Warren, his uncles, Croby, Willie CB Winslow, granddaughter, Kaylena Wall-Carty, and cousin/brother, Glenn Winslow. Family will receive friends on Monday, February 9, 2015 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, February 10 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 2607 South Avenue, Wappingers Falls.
